Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur
the land stretched between the pinnacles of the Alps and the expanse of the Mediterranean Sea, is a paradise with sandy beaches, mountains, rich history, fascinating art, charming medieval hilltop villages, glorious vineyards and markets full of dazzling colors. It is one of the most popular areas in the country, second only to Paris.
Driving through the Provence region is like entering a fairytale. It has it all, including the historic cities of Avignon and Arles. The former famed for three illustrious attractions: a medieval fortress, the papal palace, “Le Palais des Papes” and the Pont St. Bénezet Bridge. The latter, a small town that was home to Van Gogh for many years, contains one of the most well preserved Roman amphitheaters still used today for bullfighting. The fortified hilltop village of St. Paul de Vence, known for its art galleries and fine restaurants, can also be found here.
If visiting here, one should make a stop at Chateauneuf du Pape to taste some of the best wines in the world, walk through the Beaumes-de-Venise: unique terraced vineyards near Mt. Vento, or visit Apt,a fabulous market town where truffles, or as they are often called the ‘Black Diamond of Provence’ are grown on the roots of the local oak trees.
Visiting Nice, Cannes and Marseille in the French Riviera is an experience of a life-time. Nice is an attraction in and of itself with its intense blue-green sea, diverse shopping, spectacular dining, glorious art deco and famous museums: Nice's Musée Chagall and Musée Matisse. Cannes, delightful and upscale, is best known for its annual film festival, designer boutiques and flocks of celebrities, which can be spotted throughout the town. One of the oldest sea ports, Marseille, is not only surrounded by numerous legends, but is also well known as the birthplace of of France’s national anthem, La Marseillaise.
You can’t go wrong with dinning in Provence whether it is a celebrated ratatouille, a vegetable stew - the glory of the region, or a Marseille local specialty – bouillabaisse, a zesty sea-food. Our inspirational recipe is a very provincial and delightful dish - ‘Le Clafouti’. Although traditionally a dessert, le clafouti is now often served all over France as warm and sweet breakfast dish.
How do you say 'beautiful' in French? Just say: la belle Provence… and start your day with a French style breakfast and a delightful cherry clafouti.
